Hondoq Bay Gozo — The Complete Guide to Swimming, Snorkelling, Cliff Diving & Getting There by Boat
Ask a Gozitan where they go when they want to escape the tourist trail and swim in water that looks like it belongs in a travel documentary — and there’s a good chance they’ll point you to Hondoq Bay.
Tucked into the southeast coast of Gozo, just a short walk from Mġarr Harbour, Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay is one of the most beautiful and genuinely local swimming spots on the island. It has a Blue Flag beach, crystal-clear water, great snorkelling, cliff diving spots, and views straight across to Comino and the Blue Lagoon that are simply stunning — especially in the evening when the light turns golden.
It’s the kind of place that doesn’t shout. It doesn’t have a famous Instagram angle or a queue of day-trippers waiting to take the same photo. It’s just a genuinely beautiful Gozo bay, beloved by the people who live here, and increasingly discovered by the visitors who make the effort to find it.
Hondoq Bay is also a regular stop on our private Gozo boat tours — one of those spots where the skipper slows the engine and lets the boat drift, because the water is that good. Read on to find out exactly what makes it special, and how to experience it at its best.
Where Is Hondoq Bay in Gozo?
Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay sits on the southeast coast of Gozo, within walking distance of Mġarr Harbour — the port where the ferry from Malta arrives. The nearest village is Qala, a quiet hilltop settlement that looks down over the bay and out toward Comino.
The position is part of what makes Hondoq special. Facing southeast, the bay catches the morning sun perfectly — making it one of Gozo’s best sunrise spots. And because it looks directly across to Comino, on a clear day you can see the turquoise of the Blue Lagoon from the shore — a view that surprises almost everyone who sees it for the first time.
How to Get to Hondoq Bay
🚗 By Car — Easiest Option
The most straightforward way to reach Hondoq Bay is by car. Follow the road signs from Mġarr or Qala — Google Maps works perfectly here. There’s a spacious car park near the beach, which is a welcome touch for a bay this beautiful. Rental cars are readily available on Gozo from the ferry terminal at Mġarr.
🚕 By Taxi
Taxis operate widely across Gozo and are easy to find at the ferry terminal. Ride-hailing apps including eCabs, Uber, and Bolt all work on the island, and the journey from Mġarr Harbour to Hondoq Bay takes just a few minutes by road.
🚌 By Bus
Take bus 303 toward Qala — the nearest stop is Kuncizzjoni. From there it’s a 15-minute walk of around 1.2km down to the bay. Straightforward and scenic.
🚶 On Foot from Mġarr
One of the nicest ways to arrive — the walk from Mġarr Harbour to Hondoq Bay is around 3.7km and takes about 35–40 minutes along a scenic coastal path. Follow the red trail markers and you’ll arrive with your appetite for a swim well and truly earned. The views along the way are worth it.
🚤 By Private Boat — The Best Arrival
Arriving at Hondoq Bay from the sea is a completely different experience to driving down the road. You come around the headland, the bay opens up, and the crystal-clear water over the reef is right there beneath you — that vivid, electric blue that Gozo’s southeast coast is famous for.
Hondoq Bay features as a swim stop on several of our private Gozo boat tours: the 3-hour private boat tour, the 4-hour private boat tour, the 6-hour private boat tour, and the 8-hour private boat tour. All depart from Cirkewwa in the north of Malta and head south toward Gozo’s coastline.
Prefer to do it yourself? Our half-day and full-day self-drive boat rentals let you captain your own vessel straight to Hondoq at your own pace — no licence required. And for those who want to arrive at full speed, our 2-hour jet ski safari via Malta Jet Ski Rental covers the Gozo coastline including Hondoq Bay.
What Makes Hondoq Bay Special — An Honest Description
Hondoq isn’t a spectacular bay in the dramatic, cliff-flanked way that Xlendi is. It’s a different kind of special. It’s the kind of bay where you can see families setting up for the whole day, children jumping off rocks, locals fishing from the concrete platform, and the occasional private boat anchoring offshore with a group of people who’ve clearly had the right idea.
The water quality here is genuinely exceptional — clear enough to see the seabed in detail from the surface, with that slightly deeper, richer blue that comes from the southeast facing position and the clean open-sea water flowing in from between Gozo and Comino. In 2019, Hondoq ir-Rummien was awarded Blue Flag beach status — one of only 12 beaches across Malta and Gozo to hold that certification.
The setting is wild and rustic rather than manicured — rocky limestone coastline, a small sandy and pebble beach, natural rock platforms for swimming entry, and the kind of atmosphere that feels more like a local secret than a tourist destination. Even in summer, it never gets as crowded as the main resort beaches.
And the view. From almost anywhere in Hondoq Bay, you can look southeast and see Comino floating on the horizon, and on a clear day, the turquoise blur of the Blue Lagoon beyond it. It’s the only spot in Gozo where you get that view from the waterline — and it’s even better from the sea.
Swimming at Hondoq Bay
The swimming at Hondoq is excellent, and there are options for every type of swimmer.
The small sandy and pebble beach at the head of the bay has shallow, sheltered water that’s ideal for families with young children. The entry is supervised during summer months, the water is calm, and the depth increases gradually — no sudden drop-offs.
For stronger swimmers, the rocky edges of the bay offer concrete platforms and natural ledges where you can drop straight into deeper, clearer water. The northern border has a concrete platform that’s popular with local swimmers and divers. The limestone rocks on the southern side are riddled with cracks and small caves that make the entry area genuinely interesting to explore even before you get your snorkel on.
The water temperature follows the Mediterranean rhythm — comfortable for swimming from May through November, at its warmest and most inviting in August and September.
If you’re visiting Hondoq on one of our private boat tours, you’ll anchor offshore and swim directly from the boat — accessing the clearer, deeper water away from the beach area. It’s a noticeably different experience. For tips on the best swimming spots around Gozo and Malta, see Outdoor Explorers Malta’s complete Gozo guide.
Snorkelling at Hondoq Bay — What You’ll See
Hondoq ir-Rummien has a strong local reputation for snorkelling, and it’s well deserved. The combination of Posidonia seagrass meadows, rocky reef sections, and underwater caves creates a genuinely varied underwater environment — more diverse than many of the more famous snorkelling spots around Malta.
🐟 Fish Species at Hondoq Bay
The rocky sections of the bay — particularly the southern extension of the limestone shore — are home to a healthy population of Mediterranean reef fish. Here’s what you’re likely to encounter:
- Common Wrasse — one of the most abundant species here, bold and inquisitive
- Rainbow Wrasse — beautifully coloured, often seen in the shallower reef sections
- Ornate Wrasse — striking markings, found among the rock crevices
- Painted Comber — vivid striped fish, one of the Mediterranean’s most photogenic species
- Sea Bream — shoals of these in the open water sections
- Octopus — common sightings in the crevices and under rocky overhangs
- Damselfish — small, darting, found in large numbers around the reef edges
The Posidonia meadows in the bay are particularly important for marine life — these protected seagrass beds are among the most biodiverse habitats in the Mediterranean, providing food and shelter for juvenile fish, sea urchins, and small crustaceans. Snorkelling over a healthy Posidonia meadow is genuinely remarkable.
All snorkelling gear — masks and fins — is included on every private boat tour. No experience needed. For a full guide to snorkelling around Malta, Gozo, and Comino, see Outdoor Explorers Malta’s snorkelling locations guide and our snorkelling guide for Comino and the Blue Lagoon.
Cliff Diving at Hondoq Bay
Hondoq Bay has several cliff diving spots that are popular with locals throughout the summer — safe, well-used, and at multiple heights that work for everyone from cautious first-timers to experienced jumpers.
The lower rocks give you a gentle introduction — a metre or two above the water, enough to feel the rush without the commitment. The higher ledges give you a proper adrenaline hit. The water beneath is deep and clear, and the diving spots are well away from the swimming area, making it safe for everyone.
If you’re arriving by private boat, your skipper can position you right next to the diving ledges so you can jump directly from the rocks and swim back to the boat — the cleanest way to do it.

The Views from Hondoq Bay — Comino, Blue Lagoon & Beyond
This is one of the things that makes Hondoq genuinely unique among Gozo’s bays.
Because of its southeast-facing position, Hondoq Bay has a direct sightline to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. On a clear day — which in Malta is most days — you can see the turquoise of the lagoon shimmering on the horizon from the beach. It’s a view that reminds you just how close these islands are to each other, and how different the water looks depending on where you’re standing.
In the evening, the light from the setting sun catches Comino from behind, silhouetting the island against an orange and pink sky. It’s one of the most underrated sunset views in Gozo — not as dramatic as Xlendi, but quieter, more personal, and genuinely beautiful in a way that rewards the people who seek it out.
The sunrise at Hondoq is equally special. Positioned to the east, the bay catches the first light of the day perfectly. On partly cloudy mornings, the sky turns deep red before the sun breaks the horizon — and on the best days, the light aligns between the farthest point of Gozo and Comino in a way that’s genuinely extraordinary. If you’re staying on Gozo, setting your alarm for sunrise at Hondoq is worth every minute of sleep you sacrifice.
Things to Do at Hondoq Bay
🏊 Swim and Sunbathe
Sunbeds are available for rent at the beach during summer months. The combination of clear water, morning sun, and relatively quiet atmosphere makes Hondoq one of Gozo’s most relaxing day-trip destinations. Bring a picnic, rent a sunbed, and stay as long as you like.
🤿 Snorkel the Reef
The rocky southern section of the bay is the best entry point for snorkelling. Head out over the reef and into the Posidonia meadow beyond — the fish life here is genuinely rich and the visibility on a calm day is exceptional.
🏔️ Cliff Dive
Multiple entry points at varying heights make Hondoq one of the most accessible cliff diving spots on Gozo. Start low, build confidence, and work your way up. The water is deep and clear.
🚤 Water Sports
During the summer season, water sports are available directly at Hondoq Bay — including crazy sofas, UFO rides, kayaks, canoes, water skiing, paddleboarding, kneeboards, and wakeboards. Self-drive boats and jet skis are also available for rent at the beach. For organised jet ski safaris covering the full Gozo coastline including Hondoq, see our partners at Malta Jet Ski Rental.
🌅 Watch the Sunrise
Set your alarm. Seriously. Hondoq Bay facing east means you get the full Mediterranean sunrise show — red sky, golden light, Comino on the horizon. It’s one of the best sunrise spots on the island and barely anyone talks about it.
🎣 Fish with the Locals
Hondoq is a favourite fishing spot for Gozitans, and if you’re visiting outside peak season you’ll often find local fishermen on the rocks. It’s one of those rare spots where you can genuinely connect with island life rather than just passing through it.
How to Visit Hondoq Bay on a Private Boat Tour
The best way to experience Hondoq Bay — and the way most visitors wish they’d done it — is from the water. Anchoring offshore, the water clarity is even better, the reef is more accessible, and you have the whole bay to yourselves rather than sharing it with whoever else has driven down the road that day.

Practical Tips for Visiting Hondoq Bay
⏰ Best Time to Visit
Early morning is best for swimming and snorkelling — the water is at its calmest, the light is beautiful, and the bay is at its quietest. Sunrise here is genuinely unmissable if you can manage it.
High season (July–September) sees the bay at its busiest. May, June, early October offer the best combination of warm weather, calm water, and a quieter atmosphere. Weekday mornings in summer are noticeably more peaceful than weekend afternoons.
☀️ Sun Protection
Malta’s sun is intense, especially between June and September. High-factor sunscreen applied regularly, a hat, and plenty of water are non-negotiable. The limestone rocks reflect heat as well as light — it’s easy to underestimate how much sun you’re getting.
🌊 Water Safety
Always check conditions before entering the water. Be aware of underwater rocks near the entry points, keep an eye on current conditions particularly around the reef sections, and stay within your depth and confidence level. During summer months the beach is supervised, but outside those hours take extra care.
🎒 What to Bring
Swimwear, towel, sun protection, snorkel mask if you have one (included free on all our private boat tours), water, snacks, and a camera. If you’re joining a boat trip, bring your drinks and food — we’ll provide the ice box.
Hondoq Bay for Every Type of Traveller
👨👩👧 Families
The sheltered sandy beach with shallow, supervised water makes Hondoq one of Gozo’s most family-friendly bays. The water sports rentals in summer add plenty to keep older children occupied, and the local, relaxed atmosphere is a world away from the packed resort beaches. For more on bringing the family on a private boat trip, see our guide to private boat trips for families in Malta.
💑 Couples
Hondoq at sunrise or sunset is genuinely romantic — quiet, wild, and with views of Comino that you won’t find anywhere else on Gozo. Combine it with a private boat tour and a sunset dinner in Xlendi and you have one of the best days possible on the island. For the ultimate couples’ boat experience, see our private boat for couples guide.
🤿 Snorkellers & Divers
The Posidonia meadows, rocky reef sections, and diverse fish population make Hondoq an excellent snorkelling destination — better than many of the more visited spots around Malta. For serious divers, the bay has established diving centres and the water quality is superb. Combine Hondoq with our snorkelling-focused 4-hour private boat tour for the full experience.
🏄 Adventure Seekers
Cliff diving, jet skis, kayaks, wakeboards, and a full suite of water sports in summer — Hondoq has the adventure covered. Our 2-hour jet ski safari via Malta Jet Ski Rental is one of the most exciting ways to experience the bay, arriving at speed with the Gozo cliffs in the background.
Hondoq Bay and the Blue Lagoon — Two Sides of the Same Archipelago
One of the things that makes Hondoq Bay so compelling is the view it gives you across to Comino. From the shore, the Blue Lagoon is visible on the horizon — a turquoise shimmer that makes the connection between these islands feel tangible rather than just geographical.
On our longer private boat tours, guests often visit both in the same trip — swimming in the Blue Lagoon in the morning and stopping at Hondoq Bay on the Gozo coast in the afternoon. It’s a genuinely complete picture of what the Maltese archipelago looks like from the water. For more on planning a trip that covers both, see our guide to the best boat trips in Malta 2026 from Outdoor Explorers Malta.
And for everything you need to know about visiting the Blue Lagoon itself, our complete Blue Lagoon Malta guide covers every question worth asking.
