Blue Lagoon Malta in June — The Complete Guide 2026
If you are planning a trip to the Blue Lagoon in Malta and you have the flexibility to choose your month — choose June.
Not July. Not August. June.
This is not a marketing opinion. This is the honest view of a team that is on these waters every single day — and June is consistently the month we recommend most to guests who ask us when to come.
Here is everything you need to know about visiting the Blue Lagoon in June — the water conditions, the best time of day, the marine life, the dolphin chances, and the insider tips that only come from being here 365 days a year.
Why June is the Best Month for the Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is extraordinary in every month of the summer season. But June has a specific combination of conditions that July and August simply cannot match.
The water is warm — but the crowds are not yet at peak.
By June, the Mediterranean has warmed to approximately 22-24°C (72-75°F) — genuinely comfortable for extended swimming and snorkelling. The water is clear, calm, and at its most vivid. The sea life is active. The conditions are outstanding.
And critically — the July and August rush has not yet arrived. The Blue Lagoon in June feels like the place the photographs promised. The Blue Lagoon in August can feel like a very beautiful, very crowded beach.
The light is extraordinary.
June gives you the longest days of the year — which means the longest windows of perfect light. The Blue Lagoon at 08:00 on a June morning, with the sun still low and the water completely undisturbed, is one of the finest natural sights in the Mediterranean.
The sea conditions in June are exceptional.
In June, the Mediterranean around Comino is at its calmest. Particularly in the morning hours and again in the late afternoon — what our skippers call the “white sea” — the surface becomes like a mirror, completely still, reflecting the sky and the limestone cliffs with extraordinary clarity. The colour of the water in these conditions is genuinely unlike anything most visitors have ever seen.
The Best Time of Day — What Our Skipper Sees Every Morning
🌅 Early Morning — Before 10:00 AM
This is our strongest recommendation — and the single most impactful decision you can make about your Blue Lagoon visit.
Before 10:00 AM, the Blue Lagoon is a completely different place.
The water is perfectly still — what we call the white sea. No boat wash, no ferry traffic, no wind. The surface reflects the morning light directly upward and the colour becomes more vivid than at any other point in the day. The white sandy bottom is visible in extraordinary detail at depth. And the shore — which by 11:30 will have hundreds of people — is quiet.
You anchor in the open lagoon. You swim. You snorkel. You feed the sea bream with white bread and watch dozens of them swarm around your hands. And the photographs you take at this hour look like the Blue Lagoon of the travel magazines — because this is exactly when those photographs were taken.
The dolphin window.
June mornings also give you the best — and almost only — chance of seeing dolphins. We see dolphins approximately once per week on our tours, and it is almost always in the early morning on the open channel between Malta and Comino. The chance on any given morning is around 20% — not guaranteed, but real. By midday, the window has essentially closed for the day.
Guests who have seen dolphins on our morning tours consistently say it was the single most unexpected and memorable moment of their entire Malta trip. The Atlantic spotted dolphins that pass through this channel in summer are extraordinary to see from a private boat — close, curious, and genuinely wild.
🌇 Late Afternoon and Sunset — From 17:00 Onward
The second-best window of the day — and in some ways the most beautiful.
From 17:00 onward, the day-trippers and ferry passengers begin returning to Malta. The Blue Lagoon shore gradually empties. The water calms again as the afternoon wind drops. And the light that hits Comino’s limestone cliffs from the west in the late afternoon is extraordinary — warm, golden, long-shadowed, and completely different from the morning light.
The sunset private boat tour is specifically designed to exploit this window — anchoring in the Blue Lagoon in the quiet of the late afternoon before watching the sun drop behind the Comino and Gozo cliffs from the water. For couples especially, this is one of the finest experiences available in Malta.
⚠️ Midday — 11:00 to 16:00
This is when the Blue Lagoon is at its most crowded. The ferries from Ċirkewwa and Marfa have been running since 10:00. The group tour boats from Sliema arrive around noon. The shore fills.
The Blue Lagoon is still beautiful at midday — the water doesn’t change. But the experience does. If midday is the only window you have, a private boat anchored in the open water away from the shore is the answer — you are away from all of it regardless of the time.
The Insider Tip — Start from Ċirkewwa
This is the single piece of advice that most travel blogs never mention — and the one that makes the biggest practical difference to your day.
Start from Ċirkewwa.
Ċirkewwa is the northernmost point of Malta — approximately 40 minutes from Valletta by Bolt or taxi, and just 10 to 15 minutes by private boat from the Blue Lagoon. It is the closest point on the main island to Comino.
By starting from Ċirkewwa, you minimize your travel time to the Blue Lagoon dramatically. By 08:30 you can be on the water. By 08:45 you can be anchored in the Blue Lagoon before any ferry has arrived.
And because you are already in the north and on a private boat, the entire Comino circuit opens up for you — Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, all six sea caves, the secret beaches, and the extraordinary south Gozo coastline if you have enough time.
A group tour from Sliema takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the Blue Lagoon, arrives at midday, and stays for 60-90 minutes before returning. A private boat from Ċirkewwa can cover more of Comino in 3 hours than most group tours cover in a full day.

What to See Beyond the Blue Lagoon — The June Comino Experience
The Blue Lagoon is extraordinary. But in June, with calm seas and a private boat, the full Comino experience is available — and it is significantly more than one famous bay.
💎 Crystal Lagoon
Just beside the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon is deeper, more intensely coloured, and consistently less crowded. In June, with the morning calm, it is frequently one of the most vivid bodies of water you will ever swim in. The surrounding cliffs create a natural amphitheatre and the June morning light hits the water at an angle that turns it from blue to something approaching electric.
Cliff diving, snorkelling, exploring the cave entrances from the water. June conditions are perfect for all of it.
For the complete Crystal Lagoon guide, read here.
🕳️ The Sea Caves
Comino has six extraordinary sea caves — Lovers Cave, Alex Cave, Tunnel Cave, Popeye Cave, Santa Marija Caves, and Damsel Cave. None are accessible without a private or self-drive boat.
In June, the calm water conditions make cave entry significantly easier and more comfortable than in rougher months. The water inside the caves in morning light creates colour effects that look genuinely unreal in photographs. Lovers Cave — 40 metres into the limestone cliff with a hidden sandy beach at the far end — is at its most extraordinary when the water is completely still.
For the complete caves guide, read here.
🤫 Tal-Ħmara — The Secret Beach
On the west side of Comino, a small completely isolated cove with white sand and vivid blue water that the ferry passengers never find. Accessible by private boat. In June, with calm seas and fewer visitors overall, this is a genuine private paradise.
🌊 South Gozo Coast
On longer tours in June — particularly the 4-hour, 6-hour, or 8-hour options — the south Gozo coastline is included as well. Żrieżaq Bay, Ħalfa Rock with its natural clay mud, Ħondoq Bay, and the extraordinary cave formations of the south Gozo coast. June is the ideal month for this section — calmer seas, excellent visibility, and the coastline at its most vivid after the winter rains.

Marine Life at the Blue Lagoon in June
The Blue Lagoon and Comino have rich marine life throughout the summer season. June is particularly good for one reason — sea bream are at their most active and abundant.
What you will see in June:
🐟 Sea bream (Awrat) — more numerous in June, July, and August than at any other time of year. Bold, curious, and extraordinary when you feed them with white bread. Throw pieces into the water at the Blue Lagoon and watch dozens arrive within seconds. It is one of the most consistently memorable moments of any Comino day.
🐠 Damselfish — dense populations at every cave entrance and rocky reef section throughout the year
🐙 Octopus — present year-round, with the highest numbers appearing from August onward. June octopus spotting is excellent in the Żrieżaq area on the south Comino coast
🐍 Moray eels — in the rock crevices at Cominotto and San Niklaw throughout summer
🦑 Cuttlefish — if you’re visiting in early June, the cuttlefish aggregation from the spring season may still be visible. Cuttlefish change colour in real time as you watch them — one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in the Mediterranean
🐬 Dolphins — your best chance is early morning on the open channel. The window exists throughout summer but morning departures maximize the possibility significantly

The Blue Lagoon Access Pass — June 2026
Since May 2025, anyone stepping ashore at the Blue Lagoon needs a free access pass registered at blcomino.com.
In June, the pass is significantly easier to secure than in July or August — time slots fill less quickly and availability is generally good even a few days in advance. That said, pre-booking is always the right approach.
The private boat advantage: If you swim from the boat without going ashore, no pass is required. You experience the best section of the Blue Lagoon — the open water — without any pass, queue, or beach crowd.
