iMalta Boat Trips was founded by brothers Sam and Josef, both born and raised in the north of Gozo, Malta. From a young age, they were immersed in the sea, spending every spare moment fishing, spearfishing, and snorkeling with their father and grandfather. This early life by the coast built a lifelong bond with the ocean—and inspired the business you see today.
While Josef remained in Malta working in the tourism and watersports industry, Sam spent over a decade backpacking through Southeast Asia, South America, Africa, and the Middle East, exploring cultures, discovering new ways of life, and gaining hands-on experience in adventure travel and water-based tourism.
Their combined knowledge of the Maltese islands and global tourism inspired them to launch something different—a local company focused on small group, high-quality sea experiences.
In 2015, Sam returned to Malta and realized there was a gap in the market: travelers were seeking private boat charters in Malta, more personalized experiences, and guides who took time to connect with guests. Mass boat trips didn’t suit everyone, especially families and couples looking for peaceful swimming spots, hidden sea caves, and the bluest waters.
The brothers bought their first boat—a 21-foot Astra named Hakunamatata—and began offering private Comino boat tours and snorkeling trips. They also introduced Subwing watersports, a unique way to glide underwater and explore the clear Mediterranean sea.
As demand grew, so did the team. In 2017, the brothers added a second boat, a Mingolla Brava 25, and welcomed their cousins Justin Paul and Joe—both long-time experts in Comino boat tours and the local watersports industry. These passionate guides know Comino and its sea caves inside out, and their energy and knowledge enrich every tour.
The family spirit continued to grow. Sam’s wife Janet took charge of bookings and social media, all while raising their two toddlers, Sol and Lalo—who are often heard in the background giving their opinions in baby language. Comfortable around boats before they could even walk, they’re being gently primed to become the next generation of sea lovers, growing up surrounded by boats, snorkels, and salty sea breeze.
In 2022, iMalta expanded into jet ski rentals and guided jet ski safaris, allowing guests to experience the coast of Comino and the Blue Lagoon at high speed—no license required. The fleet includes top-quality Sea-Doo and Yamaha jet skis, known for their performance and safety.
By 2025, iMalta also introduced self-drive boat rentals—giving guests the freedom to explore Comino and Gozo at their own pace, without a skipper or a license. These brand-new boats are safe, fast, and fun, perfect for adventurous families or couples.
To complete the experience, iMalta now offers towable watersports such as the Crazy Sofa, Aqua Rocket, and Banana Rides, making it easy to plan an action-packed day on the water.
